Altra's flagship ultra running shoe is back with major updates for 2020. The Olympus 4.0 features a redesigned outsole built around the idea of "independent suspension"--a split down the middle of the sole that helps the shoe absorb impacts while decreasing tilt or roll. Since the Olympus is a maximum-cushion style shoe, this feature helps decrease the chance of a rolled ankle with the extra foam underfoot. The high-traction outsole is now made of Vibram Mega, and is beefed up with more lugs for better grip. The Olympus 4.0 could be your secret weapon for running the Tahoe Rim this year!
Sage to Summit happened to have the only pair, anywhere, in my odd size (12.5). Altras aren't for everybody, but those of us who wear them tend to love them. Soles are super grippy, not overly-cushioned (like Hokas), and they feature magic laces that never come untied by themselves. I dig 'em. Shoes are great, service was great, shipping was fast. Will go out of my way to do business with STS in the future :)
I've got a morton's neuroma in one foot, so I need a wide toe box with plenty of room for my feet to spread naturally. These are the only shoe I've have had in years which I can run without pain or numbness in my foot. I was stuck at 3 or 4 miles before before pain cut my runs short, but I can run 10+ miles pain free in these.
