Thirty-Six Views of Mount Tom: Discovering a Sense of Place in California’s Eastern Sierra is a 2025 book by botanist and photographer Stephen Ingram that blends art, science, and deep local knowledge into a singular portrait of one mountain.
Inspired by Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, the book presents 36 paired essays and photographs of Mount Tom (13,658 ft), rising above Bishop. Created over a span of 25 years, these works capture the mountain’s shifting light, seasons, and moods while exploring its ecology, geology, and human history.
Thoughtful, visually striking, and deeply rooted in place, Thirty-Six Views of Mount Tom is both a meditation on landscape and a lasting tribute to the Eastern Sierra.
